Dean Tauss did his undergraduate work at Yale, where as a Branford student he worked in the buttery, helped organize talent shows and movie nights, managed the printing press, ran the big sib program, and served as a freshman counselor. After earning a BA in Religious Studies, he went on to get Master’s degrees in Asian Studies and Comparative Philosophy at the University of Hawaii, and an M. Phil. in Chinese History at the University of Cambridge. He is currently a doctoral candidate in Politics and International Relations at the University of Southern California, working on a dissertation on strategic thinking in US-China relations. He has taught courses and led sections in East-West philosophy, terrorism and genocide, East Asian security, political leadership, and a variety of approaches to International Relations.
Before his return to Yale, Dean Tauss worked as the director of USC’s largest residential college since its first year of operation. While there, he served as the lead instructor for an educational counseling course focusing on peer counseling, student leadership and development theory, the prerequisite for students applying to be resident advisors. Before that, he worked at the State University of New York at Stony Brook directing a residence hall and teaching courses on adjustment to college and peer education.
Dean Tauss is available to discuss anything from course selection and academic regulations, choosing a major to rooming issues, summer and career plans. The best way to make an appointment is to call the Dean’s Office (432-0520) or just stop by in BR J11 (go though the Master’s Office.) He is happy to talk with students about any topic, serious or not, and he encourages any student in crisis to come in to discuss their circumstances and consider options. As Spenser wrote in the Faerie Queene I.VIII. 40,
Mishaps are maistred by advice discrete,
And counsell mittigates the greatest smart;
Found never helpe who never would his hurts impart.
