Steven B. Smith was educated at the University of Chicago and has taught at Yale since 1984. He is the Alfred Cowles Professor of Political Science and has been the Master of Branford College since 1996. His scholarly focus is in the area of political philosophy. In addition to teaching both graduate and undergraduate classes, he is a regular contributor to the Directed Studies program and has served as acting chair of the Judaic Studies program. His introductory course on political philosophy was filmed by Yale for its Open Courses series. He was also awarded the Lex Hixon Prize for excellence in teaching in the social sciences in 2009. He is a passionate supporter of the New York Yankees and in another life hopes to be able to play for them.

Susan Smith, Master Smith’s wife and the Associate Master of Branford, is a terrific resource for all students and a great champion of the arts in New Haven. Mrs. Smith is the Executive Director of the Creative Arts Workshop and is very involved with the arts community in Branford.
